Lost in the waves
The Danish patrol boat, Triton, receives an emergency call from a stranded Russian freighter and a race against death begins when the eight Danish crew members fall overboard into the ice-cold sea in the middle of a violent storm with ten metre waves. This is the story of a rescue mission in December 2006 off the south coast of Iceland, where a young Danish sailor drowned and seven other crew members came very close to death in the freezing sea. The story builds on interviews with the Danish crew who were in the water for several hours before rescuers appeared and, along with the Icelandic coast guard’s helicopter team, risked their own lives in the attempt to save the distressed Danes. A dramatic depiction of an unimaginably difficult rescue mission, where the rescuers’ bravery meant the difference between life or death for the Danes lost in the rough seas.
