Jens Smærup Sørensen (b. 1946) is the author of many well known novels and garnered a huge breakthrough with 2007’s Mærkedage, which won the Danish bookseller’s prize, ‘De gyldne laurbær’. The novel is a modern classic in Denmark for its depiction of the decline of a society based on agriculture and the rise of the welfare state. This was followed up with Hjertet slår og slår in 2012, Feriebørn in 2015, and his latest book, the autobiographical Jens, was published in 2018. Smærup Sørensen was a member of The Danish Academy from 1995 – 2020 and is the recipient of all of Denmark’s major literary prizes.
Jens Smærup Sørensen is one of Denmark’s foremost authors of prose. He is chair of the Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Literature. Over the years he has been awarded a long list of prizes for his work.
